Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2: a reboot… we truly needed

Surprise Star Fox Direct!

I’ve been thinking about starting this blog for months, and today the first step finally happened thanks to the announcement of Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2. What an incredible moment for an old-school fan of this franchise since the Nintendo 64 era! (And yes, I’ll admit it: I only played the Super Nintendo version many years later.)

Finishing work and suddenly being blessed with an unexpected Nintendo Direct dedicated entirely to Star Fox was genuinely exciting. Rumors about a new Star Fox game for the Switch successor had been circulating for quite a while, but even if leaks had spoiled part of the surprise, the sudden way Nintendo revealed the game completely made up for it.

After all, nobody expected a surprise Direct focused exclusively on Star Fox, right? At least not from what I had seen online.

Surprise Nintendo Direct: Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2

The presentation opens with legendary creator Miyamoto-san talking about Fox’s role in the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Then Koizumi-san takes over to announce a brand-new Star Fox that revives the… classic Nintendo 64 game. Again.

At that exact moment, I watched the Direct with a bit of concern.

We already had a remake on Nintendo 3DS, right? And Star Fox 64 itself was already a reimagining of the original SNES game. Not to mention Star Fox Zero on the ill-fated Wii U, which was, in many ways, another reinterpretation of the same concept.

So after spending so many years in limbo, were we really just getting another revamped version of the game that defined the franchise on the Nintendo 64?

YES!!

And as the Direct continued, that concern slowly turned into growing excitement.

A necessary reboot

Fox McCloud in Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2

A lot of people may think another Star Fox 64 remake or remaster is unnecessary — or even uninspired. But honestly? I disagree.

Now that the initial hype has settled a bit, this move feels incredibly strategic.

Much like the Metroid Prime Remastered release brought gorgeous visuals and an affordable price point to reconnect both longtime fans and newcomers, this definitive version of Star Fox 64 feels designed to re-establish the franchise’s identity.

The truth is that Star Fox experimented a lot over the years. Assault, Command, Guard… Nintendo constantly tried different ideas with the series. On Wii U, they attempted to innovate with dual-screen gameplay, switching between cockpit view and third-person action, but the execution divided players — especially on a console that struggled commercially.

Super Mario Galaxy The Movie – Just in Time, huh?

Fox appearing in the Super Mario Galaxy movie, combined with this “ultimate” version of Star Fox, feels like the perfect package to reintroduce the series to a modern audience.

By expanding the story with new dialogue, cutscenes, missions, challenges, and refreshed multiplayer features, the game even drops the “64” from its title and positions itself as the true new starting point for the franchise.

It almost feels like Nintendo is saying:

“This is the timeline we’re moving forward with from now on.”

A new beginning for Fox McCloud

The new design for Fox in Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 leans into a more realistic visual style while still preserving the character’s identity and charm.

Redefining the franchise’s foundation might be exactly what Star Fox needed to finally escape Nintendo’s freezer for good.

To make things even better, the game launches at a reduced price point, repeating the same smart strategy used for Metroid Prime Remastered.

Since childhood, my brother and I have memorized Star Fox 64 quotes and still repeat them to this day. Hearing those iconic lines officially dubbed in our language adds an emotional layer that players from countries with long-established local dubbing probably won’t fully understand.

For us, this is an absolute Day One purchase.

If you’re not into on-rails shooters, that’s totally fair. And if you’ve never played the original game and want to experience the roots of the franchise, the classic version is still available through Nintendo Switch Online.

But for players ready to dive into a renewed adventure starring the galaxy’s coolest space fox and his legendary boots… we’re being very well served.

Fox and his crew

Star Fox launches on June 25 for Nintendo Switch 2, fully dubbed in Brazilian Portuguese, priced at R$279.90 on the Brazilian eShop (at the time of writing).

And what about you? What did you think of the announcement? Are you excited, or are you planning to skip it entirely?

If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading. Please keep the comments respectful, and see you next time 😉
